Another epic year at White Grizzly! Although there wasn't any new snow, we had a fabulous time. The skiing and snowboarding was great and as always Brad and Carole were fabulous hosts.

Day 6 Stevens Pass -- Really this time!

Seven inches with a promise of more on the way got us to try again on Sunday. This time the road was open and we made it up there. I took my Salomon AK Rockets (big fat skis) up in hope of deep powder. Unfortunately, it had warmed up and we were skiing cement mixer. The skis were still a reasonable choice as they acted like a big surf board in such conditions. It continued to snow another 6 inches of wet, slushy stuff while we were there and with strong winds to ensure we were pelted in the face!

Oh well, it was great to get out on skis and not get turned away from the resort! If you are counting, I am 2 for 4 at Stevens this year.

Day 6 Stevens Pass -- Not quite!

This past weekend, I got up early on Saturday to take advantage of a big dump (over 12 inches) at Stevens Pass and head for a day of skiing with Kris and Lisa. Outside of Munroe, there was a sign indicating the road was closed 40 miles ahead. The ski resort is 49 miles ahead. Generally, this is just an avalanche that needs to be cleared, but this time, it was power lines and a tree across the road. We got turned around with a statement of "6 hours before the road will open". Of course, we heard later that the road opened around 10:30. Oh well.

I went to Stevens on December 22 with Jay. It had only snowed a few inches, but we wanted to get up and make some turns. We got up there, did a few warm up runs and then started hiking from the top of Tye Mill and dropping into the side around Rock Garden. By the time we did that 5 times, it was time for lunch and we thought that we had a better than expected day. After lunch, we started hiking Cowboy Ridge! That is where the epic conditions came in. We did the run 3 times and called it.

Probably my best day at Stevens ever!

P.S. I was riding my Rossi Pow Air Pro (tiny park/mogul skis), but these things rocked going through trees and 12 inches of powder.

I went to Stevens Pass yesterday to participate in the Sturtevant's Demo Days and try out a bunch of skis. However, there were high winds and I got 4 runs: 3 on Daisy Chair and 1 on Hogs Back. Then the mountain was shut down and we went home and I went to work. Oh well. That is what the mountain environment is all about.

Let it snow, but without the wind!

P.S. I did demo a pair of 188 Salomon 1080 Guns. Overall a pretty good ski methinks, but I didn't get to really put it through the paces or compare with anything else. I really want to try the Volkl Mantras and Gotamas and the Rossignol B3s.

I demoed the Seth Vicious skis in the 179cm length and man, they were Beeefy! I don't know if I would buy them because they are a little slow edge to edge, but they rocked pretty much the entire mountain. I am going to Sturtevant's Demo Days in December and I will let you know more about my favorite skis then.

Well the ski and snowboard season is off to a hell of a start. Whistler has a received 400cm (160 inches) in November. I was lucky enough to go skiing up there over Thanksgiving. Two days of skiing and one day of telemark. Three great days under my belt! I did two hikes out to Harmony ridge and got some epic powder lines for early in the season.

Although you may think Whistler got a lot of snow this November, take a look at Mt. Baker. On November 27, this was posted on their web site: "We have DEEP SNOW CONDITIONS at the ski area today with 86 INCHES OF NEW SNOW IN THE PAST 4 DAYS and 132 inches of new snow in the week!" Yesterday, they were requiring avalanche transceivers and gear to ride INBOUND on Chair 6.

INSAaaNE!

They now have the largest base of any place on the continent with 120 inches!

I love Whistler!

Last weekend, I was able to get away for three days and head up to Whistler with Pat and Cathy. It's always a blast. The weather was warm and mostly sunny, allowing the snow to soften up during the day.

Although I did some of my normal mogul runs, Pat and I decided to spend some time in the park too. Whistler built a really nice beginner park – one with good kickers but no table tops to clear. Here are some pictures from this adventure and a video of Pat's first (and also successful!) 360.

It was great to get out and play in the snow one last time this season.

I just threw this video quickly together from some video that Peter (our lead guide) shot with a digital camera. All things considering reasonable quality shots of quality action! We got Mich doing a front flip, James doing a back roll, Jay and Simon going big and a group mayhem finale. White Grizzly rocks!
